One of the ironic things about health insurance is that it pays to take out insurance when you are healthy as obtaining insurance once you are sick or have suffered from a particular condition can be expensive and some companies will not touch you at all once you have been diagnosed with certain illnesses.
If you have a good track record with health, it is likely to be fairly straightforward and not too expensive to obtain health insurance. However, once you have had a brush with many types of illness then you may have limited cover which does not include your illness – which is why you want it in the first place!
So should only the healthy apply for insurance at all? Does this not defeat the object of having health insurance? That is the fifty million dollar question.
The truth is that as long as you are honest with your health insurer, then you may be able to find a solution. I have suffered from asthma for years and have also had to claim for it a couple of times after I had attacks on holiday – yet the claims were processed quickly and as far as I can see it did not result in any increase in premiums.
It really depends on what type of condition you have but the most important thing is to be honest about it.
